Art+Education faculty teach many of the required courses for the program. In addition, faculty from other schools at NYU work with students as part of their elective coursework.

Dipti Desai

Dipti Desai is Associate Professor and Director of the Graduate Art + Education Programs at New York University, USA. As a scholar and artist-educator her work addresses the intersection between visual art, activism, and critical pedagogy. She has published widely in the area of critical multiculturalism/critical race theory in art education, contemporary art as a pedagogical site, and critical pedagogy. She is the co-editor of Social Justice and the Arts book published by Taylor and Francis and her co-authored book History as Art, Art as History: Contemporary Art and Social Studies Education received an Honorable mention for Curriculum Practice Category by Division B of American Education and Research Association (AERA). Among her awards, she received the Ziegfield Service Award for contribution to International Art Education and the Specialist Fulbright Award. Her research interests explore contemporary art as a critical pedagogical site, artistic activism, and critical race theory in art + education.

Jessica Hamlin

Jessica Hamlin is an educator interested in contemporary art as a site for critical discourse and the potential of artistic practices to inform new pedagogical possibilities in K-12 classrooms. Jessica previously served as the interim Director of the Art + Education program. Her teaching interests include: contemporary art and artistic activism, critical pedagogy, and the intersections of art and educational theory. Prior to joining NYU, Jessica served as the Director of Educational Initiatives for ART21, founding the ART21 Educators learning community and launching Creative Chemistries–a platform for timely trans-disciplinary exchange between artists and educators. Additional experience in a range of cultural organizations, schools, and in city government has included facilitating the education programs at the non-profit gallery Art In General, directing the community-based Saturday Art School at Pratt Institute, managing a comprehensive planning and assessment process for the Boston Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs examining school and community-based arts programs, and overseeing a three-year initiative in the Boston Public Schools to support the arts in middle schools in partnership with local arts organizations. Jessica co-authored the book, Art as History, History as Art: Contemporary Art in the History Classroom (Routledge, 2009) and has published articles in School Arts and Art Education magazine as well as the ART21 Magazine.

Part-Time Faculty

Part-time faculty and adjuncts are highly visible artists and scholars on the cutting edge of the field. Many of them are full-time art teachers in K-12 schools across the city.

Priyanka Dasgupta


Priyanka Dasgupta is a visual artist and educator currently living in New York City. Priyanka's video installations have been featured at the Queens Museum, International Center of Photography, Jersey City Museum, Galleria di Piazza San Marco, the British Film Institute, Lalit Kala Akademi, and Seoul Art Space. Reviews of her work include the New York Times, the Times of India, Art India and Take on Art. Priyanka is the recipient of an NEA grant and has participated in the Transparent Studio residency at Bose Pacia, Aljira Emerge with Creative Capital and the AIM Program at the Bronx Museum, in New York. Prior to teaching at NYU and City College, she acquired extensive teaching experience as an Artist in Residence in New York City Public Schools. Priyanka has a Masters in Studio Art from New York University & the International Center of Photography, and a Bachelors in English Literature from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. She is currently represented by Shrine Empire Gallery in New Delhi.

Joe Fusaro

Visual Arts Chair, Nyack Public Schools - Nyack, NY; Senior Education Adviser, ART21 - New York, NY

Joe Fusaro received his Masters Degree in Education from the City University of New York and his Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from Hofstra University. He is an exhibiting artist, educator, and the Visual Arts Chair for the Nyack Public Schools since 2003. From 1990 through 2003 he was a teacher and staff developer in the New York City Public Schools. Fusaro has led numerous staff development workshops in contemporary art education for organizations and institutions such as the National Art Education Association, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the University of Florida and Bard College. Recent exhibitions of his work include solo shows at 287 Spring Gallery in SoHo, New York City, and the Garner Arts Center in New York.

Amin Hussain

Palestinian-American Lawyer, Visual Artist, and Activist

Amin is a Palestinian-American lawyer, visual artist, and activist based in New York. He has a BA in Philosophy, a JD from Indiana University Law School, and an LLM in Law from Columbia University. He practiced law for five years before transitioning to art, studying at the School of the International Center of Photography and Whitney Independent Study Program. Amin is an adjunct professor at the New School for Public Engagement, Media Studies Department, New York.

Elizabeth Koch

Teacher, PS 3 - New York, NY

Elizabeth Koch has been teaching at public school 3 in Manhattan since 2005. During this time she has developed curruculum, led professional development workshops, and participated in an on-going inquiry team process. Her curriculum and professional development specialities include integration of curriculum (with a particular focus on the arts) centered around social inquiry. Elizabeth has been an adjunct professor in the Art Education, and Teaching and Learning departments at NYU since 2011. Her art work uses multi-media to create emotional landscapes on paper and fabric. She also coordinates and participates in a multi-artist experimental project called "The Flow."

Nick Kozak

Artist/Educator, Manhattan/Hunter Science High School - New York, NY

Nick Kozak was born in the USA. He is currently the Artist Educator Manhattan / Hunter Science, a public school in Manhattan, where he teaches Studio Art, Contemporary Art History, and general awesomeness. He currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with his wife, cat, and growing collection of comic books. More than often he makes food for people. Also, he makes art.
