A Concentration in Songwriting

Develop and expand your musical creativity in diverse styles. The Music Composition Program at NYU Steinhardt enables you to advance your music writing skills in concert settings and visual media as well as songwriting. You will collaborate with a wide range of music performance students and work with students and faculty from our Music Technology Program in our state-of-the-art recording and production facilities.

As a student at one of the world’s leading universities, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with:

  • Filmmakers from the acclaimed NYU Tisch Film & Television program, writing music and songs for short films, animated films, and TV
  • Video game and virtual reality creators
  • Choreographers for dance performances
  • Writers and directors of theatre and music theatre productions

Your music will be recorded and performed by:

  • NYU ensembles, including the NYU01 orchestra, NYU Percussion Ensemble, or the NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble
  • Professional musicians from New York City’s rich artistic environment

You will also have the option to pursue a concentration that allows you to develop your skills through a specialized course track. As an undergraduate student, you can choose a concentration in either Screen Scoring or Contemporary Production and Songwriting before or during your studies. If you’re a graduate student, you can choose one of our concentrations before applying.
