NYU Metro's LPP Kicks Off Summer Culinary Arts Program

NYU Metro's Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) kicks off the summer with the Culinary Arts Program providing students with hands-on experience that incorporates farm-to-table practices. Students engage in daily culinary activities with Chef Carmen and Chef Thomas to prepare dishes that are fun to make, healthy, and simple. Students also learn to shop for produce, order meat from a butcher while partaking in outdoor gardening activities and utilizing hydroponic garden towers and soil-based gardens.

Throughout the program students will acquire culinary skills to encourage independence and critical thinking about food choices. The Culinary Arts provide built-in mentoring opportunities and reinforcement of the curricular areas. As part of workforce development, each student will be trained to obtain a Food Handlers Certificate which will enable them to gain work in places such as restaurants, bakeries, etc.

Recently, the students have learned to make an assortment of various healthy dishes pictured below.(Chicken Egg Rolls, Deep-Fried-Stuffed Avocado with Tuna and Salmon, Cinnamon Apple Egg Rolls, Korean Barbecue Pork with Brown Rice, Cuban Sandwiches with a twist - made on fried plantains as opposed to bread, Mixed Berry Brioche French Toast with fresh whipped cream and caramel sauce, to name a few!)
