PRIISM and Applied Statistics Center at Columbia University are home to a new IES Postdoctoral Training Program 

Training Program Overview 

Changes in the depth and rigor of education research have led to increased demand for quantitative expertise. The goal of the NYU/Columbia Quantitative Training Program, Q-TRAIN, is to address this need by training four postdoctoral fellows both to develop the new statistical methods required to meet future research challenges and to effectively train and consult with other education researchers.

The training program has four major components:

  1. Research
  2. Skill/knowledge acquisition
  3. Training and Consulting, and 
  4. Career development.

Fellows fulfill the first component by participating in methodologically-focused research projects with a faculty mentor and engaging in more applied research projects with other faculty at NYU Steinhardt or Teacher’s College (for more information click here). They also gain skills and knowledge through more formal avenues by auditing classes or short courses and participating in weekly seminars. Fellows have the opportunity to practice teaching statistics to and consulting with applied education researchers through activities such as developing and presenting short courses for faculty and students who participate in education research or helping to teach a consulting course for graduate students.

Mentors provide support for career development by supervising and providing feedback on their training activities and providing workshops on topics such as ethics, writing, and interactions with researchers outside the university setting. Fellows also gain experience participating in the grant submission process as part of a team as well as by developing their own grant proposals.
