Graduation outcomes of students who entered New York City public schools in grade 5 or 6 as English learner students

This study describes high school graduation outcomes for students who entered New York City schools in grade 5 or 6 as English learners. The analysis focuses on 1,734 students who entered New York City schools and were initially classified as English learners in grades 5 and 6 in the 2003-2004 school year. The study follows these students through their expected graduation and for two additional years, to examine on-time graduation rates, as well as five- and six-year graduation rates, and to explore how outcomes differed for short- and long-term English Learners. This work was conducted by Michael Kieffer (NYU Steinhardt) in partnership with the Research Alliance, with support from the Institute of Education Sciences through the Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands.
