PT Department Introduces New J-1 Research Internship

2016 J-1 Interns

The Department introduced a new research internship program in 2016 for undergraduate and graduate students training in physical therapy programs outside of the United States.

The program, spearheaded by Smita Rao, PT,  PhD, provides successful applicants with opportunities for mentored physical therapy research at NYU Steinhardt and at the Arthur J. Nelson Human Performance Lab. Alexandra Hummel and Carolin Schulz from the University of Bern were the inaugural research interns of  2016.

In addition to literature searches and statistical analyses with Dr. Rao, the interns participated in a wide cross section of academic programs and activities at our Department and School. From weekend intensive courses in Orthopedic Physical    Therapy to attending the “Lip Sync Battle” fundraiser and graduation festivities, they became part of the fabric of NYU life. Their mentor, Stefan Schmid, PT, MA, DSc, is a graduate of our MA program and has been instrumental in partnering with Smita and bringing the J-1 Research Internship to fruition.

The Department looks forward to awarding this internship to new students in the upcoming academic years.
