PhD in Teaching and Learning

The PhD in Teaching and Learning at NYU Steinhardt aims to prepare first-rate scholars and practitioners. You may choose to focus your studies in the following areas:

Degree Requirements

Following matriculation, students are required to complete between 48 and 60 points of study (depending on prior experience and coursework). These courses are taken in order to prepare students to conduct independent research in their focus areas.

In addition to coursework, students must also complete the department-wide written and oral candidacy requirements, complete the dissertation proposal, and complete and defend the dissertation. See degree requirements.

Because the development and completion of a dissertation depend on intensely individual interest and work, the PhD program emphasizes the individual tailoring of students' programs from the very beginning. It aims to suit the unique interests and experiences that students bring to the program and develop during their courses of study.
